As a long-term PC gamer, I've always felt I've been sold a little short. Just as the devil has the best tunes, the PC usually has the best games; like real-time strategies, first person-shooters and role-playing games. But there have always been those consoley games that looked so bright and pretty and easy-to-play. I remember seeing friends play games like Zelda, and becoming so green with envy I made the Incredible Hulk look like a squashed pea.
But then Beyond Good & Evil came along. It was unashamedly a console game simultaneously released on the PC, but it just did everything I had envied - the insane races from WipeOut, the surreal bad guys from Rez, the general leaping about a fantastical landscape from Rayman (which was also developed by Beyond Good & Evil's creator Michael Ancel).
But there's far more to it than mere gameplay. It has an intricate, detailed plot and nuanced characters. It's set on the planet Hillys, which has been torn apart by a war with the suppressing DomZ army, and the protagonist (Jade) being the key to defeating them. But all is not quite as it seems, and the purposefully Nietzscheian title of the game forms a key theme; even Jade herself holds a deadly secret.
In spite of its potential, and positive critical reviews, Beyond Good & Evil sold poorly compared to Ubisoft's other releases that year. Ancel's planned trilogy was put on hold for awhile, but the first installment has since snowballed into something of a cult game, and Ubisoft are obviously interested in resurrecting the franchise. So if you've never ventured into Planet Hillys there's literally a whole world waiting to be explored. And not a gamepad in sight.
