What Final Fantasy game should I play first?

I want to play the Final Fantasy series but I don't have the old systems for Final Fantasy 1 or 2 but I still really want to play the games, what Final Fantasy game do I need to play first to understand the series?

You can play any of them really. They are all independent of each other in terms of story. Each game is unrelated to the other (with the exception of X and X-2 where X-2 is the continuation of X's story). You dont need the old consoles to play FF 1-6, because they are all on Game Boy Advance (except 3 which is on DS). Or if you have a PSP, you can get 1, 2, and Crisis Core (the prequel to 7). If you have a PS2 or PS3 (with backwards compatability), you can play 7-12. As for which game to start with, I suggest 4 because it is my favorite out of all of them. It's on both GBA and DS (the DS version is harder though, but it it's in 3D and has voiced-over cutscenes).
