What is it about speed that makes it so damn exciting? F1, the 100m sprint event and Sonic the 'super fast' Hedgehog... it all just seems so exhilarating. Sonic's SEGA Mega Drive 2D days are still heralded as the best in the series with the first 3D version, Sonic Adventure on the SEGA Dreamcast, being seen as the best 3D game in the franchise to date. Question is: what direction did the developers go with the latest installment?
Sonic Team, who have been working on this franchise since the first incarnation in 1991, have made it clear that they are going back to their roots with 2D elements being incorporated within a 3D universe. One could say 2.5D, something like Pandemonium, where you get the best of both worlds. Let's not beat about the bush, the bits that you play as Sonic 'The Hedgehog' are absolutely brilliant. From the beautiful coastal backdrops of the Mediterranean to the sky-scraping dragons in China, it is all presented in glorious detail at a pace that will peel your eyeballs back like onions.
The stages gradually increase in difficulty and become exceptionally tricky as you jump between 2D and 3D viewpoints. Everything seems to have more purpose now. Rings provide boost and boost blasts Sonic through enemies while drifting around corners and wall jumping in the process. It is one of the rare games, if not the only, where being out of control is actually a good thing; where split-second decisions determine triumphant discoveries or untimely deaths. It's divine to see the Hedgehog on top form again. But it is short lived, we're afraid.
There is a surprise 'shock' separation. You see, Sonic now has an alter ego – Sonic 'theWerehog? Erm... yes, not exactly what you were expecting? Sonic Unleashed has brought with it new RPG elements where day and night change Sonic's appearance from Hedgehog to Werehog. This is, so the story goes, after Dr Eggman, his arch enemy, transformed him into a werewolf-like creature with the power of the Chaos Emeralds.
The Werehog presents new gameplay features, but you won't be running at high speeds anymore. Instead you will be beating up enemies using basic button combinations in a hack and slash fashion, with the pace dropping down to walking speed. There are some interesting additional abilities like arms extending to grab ledges or pillars, similar to that of Mr Fantastic, and great for misjudged jumps. Together with this you can now pick up and carry items, sometimes walking slowly over beams, and position them in a noticeable opening that in turn opens a door or disables a force field.
With the day and night feature intervening, the worlds are quite confusing to get around in, which is a shame for younger gamers, to whom these bright and colorful worlds will appeal. Added to this are 'Sun' and 'Moon' spheres scattered all over the stages which also have a purpose... and they are sadly not optional.
To progress through to the next area you need a certain amount of spheres. Jumping back and forth between stages, including the annoying 'Werehog' ones that tend to host most of the spheres, challenges your patience instead of your skills. Unfortunately there are some modes that have been neglected such as an online mode. It might not work all that well playing this online with eight other players, but a Time Trial leaderboard would have been a splendid addition to add some replay value and show off your skills. Mirror's Edge is proof that online time trial modes can be very rewarding and push your skills to the limit.
It is clear that the 2D segments in the game stand out as the more memorable sections and sparkle with future promise. SEGA is on the right track once again, but we pray that this is the last time Sonic howls at the moon.
