Is the conversion to a Ruger 10/22, from .22 to .17, for the .17 mach 2 cartridge only?
As well as what is the difference in the conversion calibers. Is the Mach 2 a better caliber to be shooting. i have heard both good and bad, but have never seen details or differences in the .17 calibers.
Yes, you can only convert 10/22 to 17HM2 only. 17HMR is based on 22mag case and 17HM2 is based on 22LR stinger case. 17HM2 is a very good caliber. Its effective range is shorter compare to a 17HMR but not by that much. Hitting small targets out to 100 yards is easy with both 17's. 17HM2 enjoyed similar accuracy level as 17HMR's but the ammo costs a lot less.
I thought about having one of my 10/22's converted to 17HM2 but I didn't. I feel we will see a lot more 17HM2's in the near future and I'm willing to wait for a factory stock 17HM2. People used to spent a lot of time and effort converting 10/22 into 22mags (not an easy task). When enough people converted their 10/22 into 22 magnums, Ruger launched 10/22 in 22mag. I think we don't need to wait that long before Ruger come out with a 10/22 in 17HM2.
