The quartet band Mimas, although new to anyone outside of Denmark, or perhaps only their hometown Aarhus, has actually existed for quite a while. However, with the musical evolution to where the band is now and an almost complete change of band members, one could say the band went from a pet project past to a serious, solid, and ambitious band around 2005 when they released the EP Hands Will Carry, and decided to play in the UK for the first time in 2006, albeit exclusively in England.
The EP Hands Will Carry and the band line up has changed since 2005 when the line-up featured Snaevar Albertsson on Vocals, Daniel Malling Beck on Guitar, Gert Hoberg on Bass and Lasse Dahl on Drums and Kenn Eskildsen on Keyboards. The sound back then was a lot more ambient than their present part, due to the influence of the keyboardist. The band then were contrasted to bands like Sigur Ros and Mogwai due to the ambient sound, high pitched vocals and drawn out sequences.
By 2008, the band had decided the musical direction they wanted to take would be more rocky and loud. Kenn left Mimas, and is now involved with a band called The Broken Beats. Later in 2008, the band's debut album The Worries was also released. It's an interesting and successful mashup between songs from when they were a five piece to the new songs as a four piece.
The change in sound the band has described as death indie. However, despite the new tone, due to the presence of tracks from the band's time as a five piece, certain reviewers can't help but continue to contrast them to Sigur Ros and Mogwai.
The Worries has met with excellent reviews across the spectrum and the band are already putting the finishing touches to their second album and for the first time going beyond the UK and native Denmark to touring across Europe.
While success isn't guaranteed, the enthusiasm of Mimas and their somewhat unique if still not clearly defined sound should take them a long way.
Mimas music band are set to make their first continental wave with their debut European tour. Find out more about Mimas via this appreciation site: http://www.mimasasylum.com
